Sparkle and Shine!
TARGET's latest charity project is to develop Sparkle and Shine! an innovative, new, musical written specifically for, and in aid of, The Sparkle Appeal, through the work of its sister initiative Early Music Makers.
The musical follows Leo, a newborn star, who can't quite shine as brightly as his friends. Despite all his best efforts he has no luck, much to the amusement of his 'friends', who pick on him for being 'little'. Fed up of being ridiculed, little Leo decides to leave his home in the stars and journey to Earth. Whilst on his travels, Leo meets lots of lovely people, from a number of different cultural backgrounds, learning each time about how different people celebrate. Each time, little Leo is involved in the celebrations and shines brighter and brighter as he becomes happier and happier. Sparkle and Shine! focuses on the themes of respect, tolerance and the unbreakable bond of friendship.
The inaugural performance of Sparkle and Shine! took place on Sunday 10th April 2011 at Llanover's Sir John Herbert Memorial Hall, Abergavenny, involving performers from Blaenau Gwent and Monmouthshire, and raising a fantastic £160 for The Sparkle Appeal. The recording of the original soundtrack of Sparkle and Shine! took place on Wednesday 1st June 2011 at Abergavenny's Salvation Army Centre, involving performers from Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire and Newport. The young people involved experienced working with professional sound technicians from InCompany Multimedia Productions, and gave participants the opportunity to be a popstar for the day. Thanks to the generous support of our Platinum Sponsor, Taylor Wimpey, and our Silver Sponsors, Frankie and Benny's and Melin Homes, we are able to make 232 hard copies of Sparkle and Shine! available to every primary school from Blaenau Gwent, Cardiff, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen, and an electronic copy available to every primary school in Herefordshire.
